Yes, Islam can coexist with democratic ideals. Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India have, or have had at some point in their histories, democratic governments. Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country, is a secular republic.
It is true, however, that Americans tend to associate majority Muslim countries, especially in the Arab world, with dictatorships and totalitarianism.
