Knoxville Evangelical Pastors’ Focus Group

The Knoxville Evangelical Pastors’ focus group formed in May of 2015, and has been meeting quarterly since that time. We are composed of approximately 12 Knoxville area pastors representing the Church of God (Cleveland, TN), the United Methodist Church, the Presbyterian Church (USA), and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. We engage in theological and pastoral conversations around the Christian responsibility to our Muslim neighbors, what the Bible tells us about interfaith relationships, and how to be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ as we engage in building a more peaceful and loving Knoxville community of multiple faiths.

During the spring of 2016 we started a year long intentional process of listening sessions in our congregations addressing these three questions. The response has been phenomenal: within our congregations, we have discovered both a rich depth of experience and knowledge and a level of anxiety with meeting neighbors from other religions. Although each of us has specific reasons for joining this group, we all hold a common desire to engage in conversation and dialogue, while also learning how to be a better pastor to our congregations. This is a vocational and spiritual community group committed to making our broader community a better place to live.
